If we emailed you and you had not heard of us before, this page explains where we got your details, what we do with them, and how to make us stop.
GENKAN Last updated: 6 August 2026
GENKAN is the trading name of Umzerii Hussain, a sole trader based in the United Kingdom. We help brands outside Japan work out whether their products can legally be sold there.
We are the data controller for the personal data described in this notice.

We are not required to appoint a Data Protection Officer and have not appointed one. Contact us directly using the details above.
If we have emailed you and you had not heard of us before, this page explains where we got your details, what we do with them, and how to make us stop.
For business contacts we approach, we typically hold:
We do not hold your home address, your personal email, your phone number, or any special category data such as health, ethnicity or political opinions. We do not buy contact lists.
From publicly available business sources. In almost every case, that means a page on your own company's website — a contact page, a press page, or a team page — where the address was published for business enquiries.
We record the exact web address we took it from, and we will tell you what that address was if you ask.
Occasionally we use a business contact database. Where we do, we say so if you ask.
Purpose: to contact you once, by email, about a specific regulatory issue we believe affects a product your company sells, and to offer a service that addresses it.
Lawful basis: legitimate interests (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(f)).
Our legitimate interest is finding businesses that need this service. We consider this proportionate because:
If you think we have got that balance wrong, tell us. We will listen, and we will stop either way.
Nobody, for marketing purposes. We do not sell, rent or share your details with other organisations for them to market to you.
Your data sits in ordinary business tools we use to run GENKAN — email and file storage. Those providers process data on our instructions only. Some are based outside the UK, in which case transfers are covered by the UK's approved safeguards, such as the International Data Transfer Agreement or an adequacy decision.
| What | How long |
|---|---|
| Contact details where you do not reply | 12 months from the last email, then deleted |
| Contact details where you ask us not to write again | Kept indefinitely — see below |
| Correspondence with clients and enquirers | 6 years, to meet UK tax and accounting requirements |
Why we keep opt-outs forever. If you tell us to stop, we add your address to a suppression list and never delete it. That list is the only way to be certain we do not contact you again by accident later. It holds your email address and nothing else, and it is used for one purpose only: to make sure we never email you again.
You have the right to:
To exercise any of these, email privacy@genkanco.com. We will respond within one month. There is no charge.
You do not need to give a reason, and you will not receive a sales reply — just confirmation that it is done.
We do not make automated decisions about you that produce legal or similarly significant effects. We do not profile you.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, please tell us first so we can put it right.
You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at any time:
Information Commissioner's Office Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire SK9 5AF 0303 123 1113 ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint
Complaining to the ICO does not affect any other legal rights you have.
If we change this notice, we will update the date at the top. This is version 1.0, published 6 August 2026.
